Bonita Springs man sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing his wife

A Bonita Springs man was sentenced to 20½ years in prison for strangling his wife last December, according to Lee County court records.

Virender Yadav, 52, was charged with second-degree murder without premeditation after he confronted his wife of 15 years, Ghelin Saray Yadav, 42, according to the Lee Sheriff’s Office.

Virender Yadav found sexually vulgar text messages from a man on her phone Dec. 28, 2017, the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Virender Yadav called the Sheriff’s Office to ask for medical assistance at an apartment in Monterra at Bonita Springs off Bonita Beach Road, just west of Old 41 Road, the agency's report says. He told deputies he had argued with his wife after he learned she had feelings for someone else, according to the report.

Deputies reported they found Ghelin Saray Yadav lying on the floor of the master bedroom while neighbors tried CPR.

Deputies took over the CPR attempt until Lee County medics arrived and tried lifesaving measures. The medics pronounced her dead.

Lee detectives determined Virender Yadav was responsible for his wife’s injuries. He was arrested and booked in the Lee County Jail.

Ghelin Saray Yadav had told her husband she had feelings for the man who sent the  text messages and that she was considering leaving Virender Yadav, the Sheriff's Office report states.

Virender Yadav pleaded for his wife to reconsider and said he didn’t want their family to separate, but Ghelin Saray Yadav told him she needed time to think, the report says.

As days passed, the couple continued to argue, according to the Sheriff’s Office report, and Virender Yadav said he noticed his wife continued to text someone.

On the day she died, Ghelin Saray Yadav had returned home after work and shut herself in the master bedroom with a bottle of wine. After the couple’s 12-year-old daughter left the Bonita Springs apartment with Virender Yadav's 24-year-old stepson to go to a religious service, Virender Yadav again pleaded with his wife to not leave their family.

Ghelin Saray Yadav raised the wine bottle over her head and told her husband to leave her alone or she would hit him, the Sheriff's Office report states.

Virender Yadav then backed away from his wife, he told detectives. She set the wine bottle down and tried to walk away from her husband, telling him she was leaving. Virender Yadav then strangled his wife, the report states.

When sentenced Nov. 27, he was given credit for 335 days already served.
