CITY OF PALMS ROUNDUP: Mountain Brook, Olive Branch, Oak Hill win on Day 1 of Classic

USA TODAY NETWORK-FLORIDA

Mountain Brook 66, Woodrow Wilson 51

In the first game of the tournament, Mountain Brook star Trendon Watford played like one, scoring 31 points to lead the Spartans to the victory over Woodrow Wilson.

Wilson's Makhi Mitchell, a Maryland commit who finished with 17 points, hit two 3-pointers to give his team a 6-0 lead, but a 19-2 run, sparked by a couple of Watford 3s, gave Mountain Brook the lead for good. Woodrow Wilson made a run after halftime, but Watford, who narrowed his college list to Alabama, Indiana, LSU and Memphis, scored seven straight points at the end of the quarter to squash the comeback attempt.

Olive Branch (Miss.) 79, Charlotte 63

Led by Memphis signee DJ Jeffries, Olive Branch, which is ranked in two national polls but not in the MaxPreps composite one, easily advanced to face Oak Hill (Va.) in the winners bracket at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Olive Branch (9-3) built a 41-23 halftime lead, then cruised as Jeffries, a 6-7, 215-pound small forward who is playing in his first national tournament, poured in a game-high 38 points on 13 of 20 shooting from the field. He also made 5 of 9 from behind the 3-point line and had a game-high 14 rebounds and two shot swats in 30 impressive minutes.

Tre Carroll led Charlotte (8-2) with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Oak Hill (Va.) 92, Sarasota Riverview 73

Unintimidated Sarasota Riverview kept it close through much of this matchup against the much bigger and second-ranked team in the nation, according to MaxPreps.

But the Warriors advanced to take on Olive Branch at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Oak Hill (9-1), which sports senior point guard Cole Anthony, considered by most the nation's top player, led just 48-36 after the first 16 minutes and, despite turning up the defensive pressure, 70-53 after three periods. The Warriors never dominated Sarasota Riverview (6-3), but they gave 34th-season coach Steve Brown his 1,119th win although he didn't appear giddy with it.

Anthony and 4-star senior guard Cam Thomas led Oak Hill with 25 points each. Anthony also had a game-high 12 rebound and nine assists.
