El Niño is back and could impact spring fieldwork

The Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service says there is a more than 90 percent chance El Niño will continue into January, but Brownfield ag meteorologist Greg Soulje says El Niño has been knocking at the door for a few months.

He says the Midwest and Plains are experiencing milder conditions this winter.

“From a temperature standpoint, I think the bitterest of the days will be few and far between and we might have already seen some of the colder readers that we’ll experience into the first 30-45 days of wintertime already over parts of the plains and corn belt locale,” he says.

But, Soulje says late-season cold could create challenges for farmers.

“I will not, at least from this vantage point, anticipate any significant field work into the early springtime season for the plains and corn belt with a protracted late-arriving spring or protracted winter-weather pattern across the corn belt,” he says.

The Climate Prediction Center says there is a 60 percent chance El Niño will continue into the spring.
