#AMonthofFaves Books On Our Winter Reading List [The 2019 Edition]

Welcome to #AMonthofFaves [The 2018 Edition] hosted by Girlxoxo, Traveling with T and Estella’s Revenge. Today it’s all about Winter reading. Which books are you looking forward to getting your hands on this winter?

KIM

Circe, Madeline Miller

This book has been on my radar the whole year. It’s been raved and raved about and I think I’m finally going to listen to it on audio.

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Michelle McNamara

Another book that has been raved about like crazy. I used to read a lot of nonfiction but then I just stopped. So I’ve challenged myself to fall in love with nonfiction again in 2019 and this is what I want to start with.

A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer—the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorized California for over a decade—from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case.

TANYA

The Suspect (Kate Waters #3), Fiona Barton

I’ve read Fiona Barton’s other 2 books, The Widow and The Child, and both were fantastic! Although all are part of the Kate Waters series, they each stand on their own and can be read in any order. I’m looking forward to this next release, The Suspect.

When two eighteen-year-old girls go missing on their gap year in Thailand, their families are thrust into the international spotlight: desperate, bereft and frantic with worry. Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth – and this time is no exception. But she can’t help but think of her own son, who she hasn’t seen in two years since he left home to go traveling. This time it’s personal. And as the case of the missing girls unfolds, they will all find that even this far away, danger can lie closer to home than you might think.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance (Legacy of Orïsha #2), Tomi Adeyemi

Both Kim and I loved this book, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the sequel will live up to the magic of the first book.

Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari’s right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy’s wrath.

How Long ‘Til Black Future Month, N.K. Jemisin

I haven’t read any short story collections this year, and there have been quite a few that have been highly recommended, includinng this one by one of my favorite authors.

How Long Til Black Future Month

In these stories, Jemisin sharply examines modern society, infusing magic into the mundane, and drawing deft parallels in the fantasy realms of her imagination. Dragons and hateful spirits haunt the flooded city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In a parallel universe, a utopian society watches our world, trying to learn from our mistakes. A black mother in the Jim Crow south must figure out how to save her daughter from a fey offering impossible promises. And in the Hugo award-nominated short story “The City Born Great,” a young street kid fights to give birth to an old metropolis’s soul.

Yesss! Circe has been on my list all year, and I even have a physical copy on the stacks, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Story of my life! And I will read ANYTHING by Jemisin. I’m especially stoked to know this is a story collection. I needs it.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is a GREAT way to get back into non-fiction. It was such a powerful book.

And I have The Widow sitting on my TBR. I didn’t realize it was part of a series. Yay!

Thanks for sharing your winter reads.

  6. I don’t know yet what I’m reading into the new year, let alone what, if anything, I’m reading in the next couple of weeks. I have a few choices, though.
