A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Oxford Township on Sunday night, according to a release from the York County Coroner's Office.

Michael Calderone, 43, of McSherrystown, was driving a 2001 Buick Century, southbound on Hanover Street in Adams County when he struck an unidentified object in the roadway, according to an Eastern Adams Regional Police news release.

The incident occurred at about 8:22 p.m. The pedestrian's name has not been released yet pending notification of next of kin, but the pedestrian has been identified as a 34-year-old man from Hanover.

Emergency personnel work at the scene of a critical pedestrian struck near the intersection of Red Hill Rd. and Hanover St. in Oxford Township on Dec. 16.

When Calderone struck what he thought was a deer, he pulled over and saw a man laying on the highway. Emergency medical services and police were notified to respond, the police release states.

Emergency medical services started to perform lifesaving procedures, but the man was later pronounced dead at Hanover Hospital at about 9 p.m.

Witnesses told police that the man was standing in the middle of the road facing north in the southbound lane.

They said he was in all black clothing, and he made no attempt to move out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, the release states.

Calderone said that he could not see the man in the road because of the glare of the headlights of oncoming traffic.
