1 person found fatally shot near Peacock Avenue and Hummingbird Street in Ventura

Ventura County saw its second fatal shooting in two days when gunfire claimed the life of a 34-year-old man in Ventura.

Around 10:30 p.m. Friday, the Ventura Police Department received a report of gunshots heard near Peacock Avenue and Hummingbird Street.

Officers responded to the scene and found a male victim in the roadway who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The victim was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Ventura County crime coverage:

Through an initial investigation, police learned the victim had been on a bicycle when a vehicle drove by and one or more people shot out of the vehicle, according to Cmdr. Tom Higgins of the Ventura Police Department.

On Saturday morning shortly after 7 a.m., two memorial candles and four beer cans had been placed on the curb near where the victim fell on Peacock Avenue, south of Hummingbird. The residential area is south of Bristol Road, generally east of Victoria Avenue on the north side of Highway 101.

A resident of the neighborhood said she heard about five gunshots. Many people came out to watch as numerous police cars arrived, she said in Spanish.

The victim lived in the area, she said, describing him as a good man.

Her silver Hyundai sedan, which was parked at the corner of Peacock and Hummingbird, had been struck by a bullet during the incident.

The curbside memorial for Friday’s shooting was set up on the south side of the alley. On the north side of the alley, in grass edging the sidewalk, an older memorial apparently from the October 2010 fatal shooting of Juan Miguel Reyes, 21, still stood. The older memorial had been wrapped with yellow police tape from Friday’s homicide.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. As of Saturday morning, no suspects were in custody and no other details were available, a police official said.

Anyone with information on Friday’s shooting is asked to call 805-339-4488.

The Ventura shooting occurred a day after a fatal shooting in Oxnard. Police said Roberto Gutierrez, 29, of Oxnard, died after the shooting that was reported just after 4:20 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Magnolia Avenue. Police found him on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was pronounced dead at 5:10 p.m. at VCMC.

Despite the proximity and timing of the homicides, Ventura police are not currently investigating possible connections between the two slayings, according to Higgins.
