Q: How did you get started in this business?

Unique handcrafted and imported gifts displayed at Concho Arts and Crafts, 209 S. Magdalen St.

A: In the 1990’s I spent a decade as the owner of Asian Food Mart in San Angelo.  I enjoyed selling items that shared my Asian culture and have collected many items from my travels.  This business is an expression of my culture and appreciation for beautiful, eclectic items.

Q: What was the inspiration for your business name?

A: I appreciate arts and crafts, especially those locally made.  The location downtown off Concho Street and near the river also inspired the business name.

Q: Best business advice you’ve received?

A: My father owned a service station in the Philippines.  He told me to always be optimistic, work hard, and have a good attitude.

Q: What motivates you to go to work every morning?

A: There’s always something new to learn every day.  I like meeting the tourists and customers who come through and learning their stories. I like learning the stories behind the collectibles and gifts I sell.

Q: Entrepreneurship can be a lonely place. What can help with that?

A: This is not only a business — it is also a meeting place and teaching venue.  People can learn things like Chinese calligraphy, jewelry-making, and lantern painting.  Having friends and local artists involved helps with building connections and keeps the place interesting.  There’s always a variety of new inventory and learning experiences.
