USDA launches major rural broadband program
The USDA is launching a pilot project to help connect more rural Americans to high-speed internet.
Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says the ReConnect program will call on communities to submit competitive broadband project ideas.
“There will be loans (and) loan-grant combinations and absolute grant combinations for different types of efforts.”
Perdue says high-speed internet is a necessity, not an amenity.
Congress has authorized up to $600 million to help rural areas achieve broadband standards set by the new farm bill.
