Wreaths Across America ceremony slated for Dec. 15 in San Angelo

Staff report
Participants lay wreaths on graves during the Wreaths Across America ceremony Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Belvedere Memorial Park Cemetery.

Members of the Civil Air Patrol’s San Angelo Composite and Texas Leadership Charter Academy Cadet squadrons will be laying wreaths as part of Wreaths Across America at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the All Veterans Cemetery inside Belvedere Memorial Park, 3504 Arden Road.

Wreaths Across America is an annual effort to remember the fallen, and honor those who served in the military.

The San Angelo group is just part of a larger effort consisting of more than 90,000 volunteers worldwide, placing 244,700 wreaths on headstones, from Arlington National Cemetery to more than 1,400 veterans’ cemeteries or war memorial sites in 50 states, as well as over 20 foreign locations.

Civil Air Patrol is one of the largest groups fundraising for Wreaths Across America, and its members also lead or participate, often with color and honor guards, in many of the ceremonies at war memorials and cemeteries held nationwide and abroad.

The public is invited to attend the event and join in laying a wreath upon a grave to say “Thank You” for someone’s life and service to our nation.

Major Becca Levesque, Commander of TLCA Cadet Squadron, noted that the cadets in the Texas Leadership Charter Academy CAP squadron have participated in the Wreaths Across America for many years. They help raise money to sponsor wreaths and many of the students are there the day of the event to lay the wreaths as well. It really connects them to the sacrifices that have been made by veterans and their families. It helps them understand what it means to show honor and why it's important.
