SAN ANGELO — San Angelo City Council unanimously voted to approve an amendment to the solid waste contract between Republic Services and the city Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018.

San Angelo resident Steve Hampton asked mayor Brenda Gunter during public comment during the meeting what items would be accepted under the amendment.

Here was the list she provided:

  • Flattened corrugated cardboard.
  • Boxboard, cereal and frozen food boxes.
  • No. 1 and 2 plastics. No. 1 plastics include soda and water bottles, mouthwash bottles, peanut butter containers, salad dressing and vegetable oil containers. The latter three should be cleaned before recycling. No. 2 plastics include milk jugs, juice bottles; bleach, detergent and household cleaner bottles; and shampoo bottles.
  • Steel, tin and aluminum cans.
  • Empty aerosol cans.

Mixed papers and Nos. 3-7 plastics will no longer be accepted in the City’s curbside recycling program under the contract change. To find out whether or not something is a Nos. 3-7 plastic, check the recycling icon on the container, as it will have the number within the triangular arrow icon.

Other items no long accepted include newspapers, milk cartons and Styrofoam.

This amendment will allow curbside recycling to continue and customers will see no change in payment.

"We are pleased to be able to continue to offer this service to our citizens, which contributes to both the preservation of natural resources and the extension of our landfill's lifespan," city manager Daniel Valenzuela said.

Public information officer Anthony Wilson said he wants people to start following these guidelines for their next trash pickup.

"Don't go through your recyclables and start digging out stuff for this time around, but start following the guidelines for your next pickup date," Wilson said.

Another change includes removal of recycling cans from customers who have been using them as garbage cans. If anyone wants another garbage can, they are available for an additional monthly cost of $5.61.
