Nebraska Farm Bureau passes meat labeling resolution

Nebraska Farm Bureau delegates, at their recent annual meeting, supported a resolution to prevent plant-based and lab-produced protein makers from using the word “meat” or other meat-related terms to describe their products.

Farm Bureau first vice president, Mark McHargue of Central City, who is a pork producer, says the labeling issue is an important one.

“We are very proud of our production and how we raise protein. But we also recognize that how we raise protein today is really a lot different than even 50 years ago,” McHargue says. “So I think there’s a sense that we need to keep an open mind, but we also really want to remain careful that the things that we’re talking about—and how we label them—that we’re talking about the same thing.”

The Farm Bureau’s resolution says it’s important to protect the significant financial investments made by farmers and ranchers over the years to market and promote meat products from the traditional harvesting of livestock.
