Krispy Kreme plays Santa: Dozen glazed doughnuts for $1 Wednesday

Krispy Kreme will show even more sugar love Wednesday.

The national bakery and coffeehouse chain will celebrate the "Day of Dozens" Dec. 12 by offering a dozen glazed doughnuts for $1 when customers purchase another dozen doughnuts.

The only Krispy Kreme in Southwest Florida — featuring a 24-hour drive-through — is in Fort Myers at 4904 S. Cleveland Ave. It opened in mid-October to great success, selling more than 900,000 doughnuts in its first two weeks. That's a lot of dough.

The popular chain began in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1937 and has expanded to more than 1,000 outlets. Founder Vernon Rudolph said he purchased a yeast-raised recipe from a New Orleans chef.
