Records: Cellphone helped police track murder suspect to Mexican border

A man suspected of killing a man on the west side in August was arrested last week in Mexico, Indianapolis police announced.

Mexican authorities arrested Narkeen Altamirano, 30, in Mexico City on Friday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release.

Cellphone location data helped track Altamirano's phone from Indiana to Georgia and then to the Mexico-Texas border, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Altamirano is in the process of being extradited to Indianapolis to face trial for murder in the Aug. 18 shooting death of Pedro Membreno-Tinoco.

Membreno-Tinoco, 31, was shot about 10:30 p.m. at a home in the 5200 block of West 34th Street. Friends were rushing him to the hospital, when he died inside a vehicle near 16th Street and Indiana Avenue, police said.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Altamirano was at a party when he fought with Membreno-Tinoco. A witness told police Altamirano retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and shot Membreno-Tinoco, according to the affidavit.

After identifying Altamirano as a suspect, the affidavit said officers tracked his cell phone number to Speedway, Ind., at about 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 19, and hours later to Atlanta, Ga., at about 2 p.m.

The next day, authorities said Altamirano's phone was tracked to near Laredo, Texas. The court documents do not say to where his phone may have been tracked after Texas.
