QBE Shootout: Brian Harman/Patton Kizzire win by 1 over Graeme McDowell, Emiliano Grillo

Patton Kizzire, left and Brian Harman congratulate each other after winning the QBE Shootout at Tiburón Golf Club on Sunday.

Patton Kizzire and Brian Harman hunt and fish together, but play golf apart.

They're usually facing off against one another in Sea Island, Georgia.

Sunday, they joined forces to rally past Graeme McDowell and Emiliano Grillo and the rain to win the 30th QBE Shootout by a stroke at Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort.

"We had to weather the storm literally," Kizzire said.

That was the tall and the short of it for the 6-foot-5 Kizzire and 5-7 Harman.

Kizzire and Harman, a late replacement for Davis Love III, completed the rally with both eagling the par-5 17th -- Kizzire from eight feet, and Harman from six. The second one wasn't needed, but hey, it was an eagle putt. That put them at 30 under, then they parred the last hole to close it out.

"We're always playing against each other," said Harman, a 31-year-old lefty, who got in the event Monday when Love withdrew because his mother was in the hospital. "Actually, that probably helped us. Now we're fine like not hating each other when we're playing golf together. We're rooting for each other."

"We're normally trying to get into each other's heads and this week he was nice to me, which was kind of weird," Kizzire said.

Kizzire, who grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Harman, who grew up in Savannah, Georgia, have been playing against each other since they were 12.

"I think there's a picture of him holding the first-place trophy and me holding the second-place trophy, but he was short and pudgy then," said Harman, who played against Kizzire in the Polo, the U.S. Junior, on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour and in some AJGA events.

"At a young age I think I got him a few times, but there in our teens he had my number, but we had a lot of good matches," Kizzire, 32, said.

Kizzire and Harman stumbled toward the end of the front nine, parring Nos. 6, 7 and 8, but then birdied Nos. 9, 10 and 11, and 13, 14 and 15 to draw within striking distance going into the par-5 17th.

"We kind of caught a little mojo and made some birdies," Kizzire said.

Emiliano Grillo, left, and Graeme McDowell study the 18th green during the QBE Shootout at the Tiburón Golf Club on Sunday.

McDowell, playing in the group in front, finished second for the second year in a row after he said he misread about a 10-footer on No. 18. That left he and Grillo a stroke back even after they birdied eight straight holes, Nos. 11-17.

"Disappointed with that putt on the last there; it was a misread," said McDowell, who was also kicking himself for missing a 2 1/2-foot birdie putt on No. 5. "I kind of feel like that green has a pull to the other side and I just under-read it a little bit. Disappointed that that's the way I'm going to finish my year."

And that he'd finish second yet again. He played with Shane Lowry last year and were a stroke behind Steve Stricker and Sean O'Hair, and he was second with Darren Clarke in 2010 behind Ian Poulter and Dustin Johnson.

"Another second place for me; I think that's about three of them," he said. "Look forward to getting back here next year and trying to go one better."

At one point, five teams were tied for the lead as the field of 12 two-person teams stretched across the front to the back nine and heavy rain came into the area. The rain dissipated after that, and then a light rain began to fall as the final group came up No. 18.

Luke List and Charles Howell III, Bryson DeChambeau and Kevin Na, and Gary Woodland and Charley Hoffman all tied for third at 28 under 188.  List was on fire on the back nine, shooting 9 under on his own ball with a pair of eagles. Woodland got their group kickstarted with a hole-in-one — the third in tournament history — on No. 5 from 202 yards.

Bubba Watson and Harold Varner III had the round of the day with a 12-under 60 and were sixth, and LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson and Tony Finau were seventh.

Now Kizzire and Harman will take that mojo into the holidays with a little fishing — on Harman's boat.

"Best boat's a friend's boat," Harman quipped.

"No need to buy one if your buddy's got one," Kizzire said.
