SAN ANGELO — Two groups of about 20 women affiliated with the Yarn Junkies store on South Chadbourne are hoping to brighten up the holidays for homeless people in San Angelo.

"These women have been working tirelessly since the summer on this project," Yarn Junkies co-owner Elizabeth Phillips said. "They've made about 52 scarves so far."

The women plan to make enough scarves to cover all the sheep in downtown San Angelo.

They got their inspiration from one woman in the group who did it on her own for the holidays several years ago. Phillips wants these women to get the recognition because of how hard they've worked.

"It takes a lot of time to finish one knitting project, so for them to take all of this time out of their busy lives to make somebody's holiday a little bit better, it's just amazing," Phillips said.

They also have another project coming up in February of 2019.

"February is Red Heart Month," Phillips said. "A woman from out of town's goal is for every baby born in Texas to have a red hat, so we've been helping with that."

Yarn Junkies helped with this project last year as well. Even though they were just getting started, Phillips said they knitted about 60 red hats for the two hospitals in San Angelo.

Phillips also wanted to let people know that the public's help is accepted and encouraged.

"If anybody wants to donate yarn, or even start knitting with the groups, they are very much welcome to do so," Phillips said.

Yarn, scarves, and hats can be dropped off at Yarn Junkies, 502 S. Chadbourne St.

If anyone wants to knit with the groups of women, they can join one of their classes on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m, and on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m.

Be sure to call Yarn Junkies at 325-227-4268 to check for availability.
