Red Lion performs their routine during the YAIAA competitive spirit championships at Dallastown High School, Saturday, December 1, 2018. Dover won the small-varsity division and Red Lion won the coed division.

Red Lion won the competitive cheer District 3 coed championship Saturday afternoon at Central Dauphin East High School. It marked Red Lion's second coed championship in three years.

Red Lion also won the coed championship in 2016-17. The Lions' stretch of dominance has only been interrupted by a runner-up finish to Conrad Weiser a year ago.

Red Lion edged fellow YAIAA school New Oxford for the title, but both school's have qualified for the PIAA championships.

Programs from York and Adams counties have had a string of success at the District 3 championships. At least one YAIAA program has won a district title for eight straight seasons. In fact, in the history of the District 3 championships, the only year a YAIAA team didn't come home with a championship came in 2010-11 — the first year for competitive cheer in District 3. Even that season, York had three YAIAA teams place second.

Cumberland Valley took home the large division title, placing ahead of Conrad Weiser. Exeter Township won the medium division. Host Central Dauphin East won the small division.

Red Lion, meanwhile, earned the right to return to the state championship, where the Lions placed third a year ago.

The PIAA championships are tentatively scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19, and Saturday, Jan. 20, at Hershey's Giant Center.
