Long harvest for Canadian farmer

A Canadian farmer says he was especially relieved to finish his harvest this year.

Steve Adams of Birch Hills, Saskatchewan says the canola harvest in northern Canada was particularly challenging. It began in mid-August and ran through the end of October.

“Four snowfalls on the crop, I believe,” Adams says. “Never huge amounts—just little shots of moisture that would stop us dead in our tracks. So it was a long, drawn-out process.”

Adams farms about as far north as you can farm in North America.

“We’re right on the edge of farmland as far as running into the trees,” he says. “You’ve got to watch out for polar bears in the winter.”

Adams farms 4,000 acres and also raises wheat and oats.

We visited with Adams at a precision ag conference in Saskatoon, one of the stops on the Canada Ag Technology Media Tour.
