Minnesota dairy farmer enduring painful period

A Minnesota dairy farmer expects the down cycle in milk prices to continue.

Dan Glessing of Waverly, which is west of the Twin Cities, says the short-term outlook isn’t good.

“We’re in this for the long haul is what I’m hearing, and certainly it’s not fun.  But we’ve got to try and see our way through it, and if we can’t it’s one of those things where how long do you hang on?  But we’ll try to make the adjustments to make that break-even a little lower so we can stay in the business.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Minnesota Farm Bureau annual meeting Friday, he says the focus remains on production.

“Just making sure your cows are producing as much as they can with what you have there.  That’s our biggest thing.”

Glessing calls this a painful period for dairy, but says progress on the trade front has generated some hope.
