Frozen ground disrupts fall fertilizer applications

Fall fertilizer applications are being disrupted by freezing soils.

Minnesota Pork Producers Association CEO David Preisler says in his state, the vast majority of manure has already been applied.

“For what’s left, it really becomes a communications issue.  And when I say that, farmers should make sure they are talking with their county.  Make sure they’re talking with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, on finding those best spots to apply that manure.”

He tells Brownfield that could mean adjusting fields to stay within permitting requirements.

“And make sure we can still apply the manure, but we’re going to have greater setbacks on sensitive features to make sure we’re not increasing any sort of possible environmental risk.”

Preisler reiterates producers should work with their county feedlot officer or the Pollution Control Agency to figure out an arrangement that protects the environment and allows the farmer to utilize manure appropriately.
