FCS America: Ethanol in brighter place than commodities

FCS America’s Chief Credit Officer says 2019 will likely be another volatile year in agriculture but ethanol looks better than commodities. Tim Cook says ethanol margins THIS year have been compressed, “But, overall the ethanol industry is very strong financially. We are seeing expansion within the ethanol industry which from a corn producer’s standpoint is very favorable and positive.”

Cook tells Brownfield year-round E15, once in place, will also be very positive, “And we’re looking forward to the EPA’s issuance of their proposed rule making that a reality. Obviously, it’ll take some time to convert existing stations and habits to get to E15 but, long term, it should be very, very positive and will continue to expand corn markets for our producers.”

As for crops, Cook says they expect a very wide level of variability in profit levels for producers, driven by weather, yields and how they marketed their crops and products.
