Memorial set for Shalyn Manson, Lansing woman police found in Grand River

LANSING -- A memorial is scheduled for Shalyn Manson, the woman who police believed died last week in or near the Grand River, adjacent to Moores Park. 

Friends of Manson will hold a "Shaynation Celebration" from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 6 at Stober's Bar, 812 E. Michigan Ave., below the apartment where she lived. 

The website for Riley Funeral Home in Lansing said Tuesday there will be no funeral service. Family and friends of Manson can sign the guestbook at bit.ly/2QXYPR5.

Stacy Fisher, Manson's friend, said Tuesday morning she's wants the memorial to serve as "a celebration of life, art and music."

"She was passionate about freedom of expression," Fisher said. "She was just passionate about people and people's rights."

Fisher said the memorial is expected to help raise funds for some type of charitable organization because Manson, 45, had a passion for helping others. 

Manson was a hair stylist for several years in Lansing, a fan of heavy metal music and other genres, and wrote occasionally for her website, ShayNation.com. 

Manson was a regular at bars and other night spots in the Lansing area, Born Shalyn Michelle Maddix, Manson appeared to have her name legally changed to Shalyn Nation Manson several years ago, according to online records.  

Manson was born in Lansing and graduated from Mason High School in 1991. She took writing classes at Lansing Community College. 

On the afternoon of Nov. 16, a Lansing police dive team pulled a person out of the river that was identified by a department spokesperson Tuesday as Manson.

They do not suspect foul play in her death.

Lansing Police Public Information Director Robert Merritt said Tuesday afternoon in an email to the State Journal that the autopsy report should be released "soon." 

Manson's body was found near the 800 block of Moores River Drive, the area where she was last seen.
