Smithfield reportedly won’t get trade mitigation payment

The USDA reportedly will not make a trade mitigation payment to Smithfield Foods. The Chinese-owned company qualified for $250-thousand dollars of USDA trade relief from the impact of the trade war with China.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley complained about the payment saying the help is intended for U.S. farmers. Smithfield had argued last month that it was eligible and is still a U.S.-based company with U.S. employees.

According to Politico, Smithfield has requested that the USDA terminate the payment and no money has been paid to the company.
