Woolsey Fire burglar allegedly took women's lingerie from evacuated home

A man who allegedly stole women’s lingerie from a Thousand Oaks home that had been evacuated during the Woolsey Fire, then later wore it at a public park, was arrested over the weekend, authorities said.

The arrest Saturday capped off an investigation of a series of incidents reported over several days.

The first call came in Nov. 10 when homeowners were returning to their residence in the 1700 block of Bridle Oaks Court. The block is on the west side of Erbes Road, south of Marview Drive.

Ventura County crime coverage:

The homeowners reportedly saw a man running from their home. He was not wearing shoes and was carrying what looked like clothing, according to the Thousand Oaks Police Department.

When the residents searched their home, they learned articles of women’s clothing had been taken, the agency reported. Using video surveillance footage from a nearby home, deputies zeroed in on a Ford Escape from the early 2000s fleeing the area at high speed, authorities said.

On Nov. 14, Thousand Oaks police responded to a call about a suspicious person at Old Meadows Park less than a half-mile west of Bridle Oaks Court. The park staff had found several items of women’s clothing in the public restroom, police said.

Surveillance video near the restroom showed a man walking in and out of the restroom in “various stages of undress and wearing women’s lingerie,” according to the police account. He also appeared to be wearing an ankle monitor. A Ford Escape of the same vintage as the residential burglary was also caught on video.

Detectives later identified the suspect as 25-year-old Jonah Bregman, of Northridge, who is on state parole for residential burglary, authorities said.

On Saturday, detectives, police and state parole personnel arrested Bregman at a relative’s house in the 1600 block of El Verano Drive in Thousand Oaks, about a 1.5-mile drive from the park, according to authorities. A later parole search at Bregman’s Northridge residence reportedly turned up clothing from the Bridle Oaks Court home, authorities said. In addition, numerous other articles of women’s clothing were also located, authorities said.

Bregman was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and misdemeanor engaging in lewd conduct, according to authorities. A state parole hold was also placed on him. He remained in Ventura County jail Monday night, with the parole hold making him not bailable, records showed. His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday.
