October milk production sets new per cow record

The USDA says milk production was up one percent during October in the major producing states from last year.

Production per cow in the top 23 dairy states was set at 1,934 pounds for the month, 20 pounds above last year and the highest total since reporting began in 2003.

Milk production in the U.S. totaled 17.9 billion pounds for October.  The national herd size declined by 30,000 from last year to 9.37 million head and was down 2,000 from last month.

Michigan had the highest per-cow production average at 2,195 pounds.  Colorado had the largest increase in milk production from 2017, up 10 percent, Texas up 7.5 percent, Kansas up six percent and South Dakota was up four percent.  The largest declines in milk production for the month were in Virginia, down 10.6 percent, Florida down 5.5 percent, Indiana down 4.8 percent, Illinois down 4.5 percent and Ohio down four percent.
