91% of U.S. soybeans, 90% of corn harvested

The end is in sight for this year’s U.S. corn and soybean harvests, even as both remain slower than normal. Colder than normal temperatures and early season snowfall in some key U.S. growing areas further delayed activity and many producers and buyers also have quality concerns. 13 of the top 18 corn production states and all 18 of the top soybean production states are behind their usual respective averages.

As of Sunday, 90% of the U.S. corn crop is harvested, compared to the five-year average of 93%, and 91% of soybeans are harvested, compared to 96% on average. For corn, Illinois, North Carolina, and Tennessee have all officially wrapped up, while for soybeans, the closest are Minnesota and South Dakota, both at 98%.

Weather issues and slow soybean harvest activity are also slowing down winter wheat planting. 93% of winter wheat is planted, compared to 97% typically this time of year, and 81% of the crop has emerged, compared to the usual pace of 88%. 56% of the crop is rated good to excellent, up 2% on the week.
