ST. JOHNS — A former Child Protective Services worker will spend a year in jail after sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

A plea deal Daniel Hulings, 34, made with prosecutors capped the amount of time he would spend in jail at one year, Clinton County Prosecutor Chuck Sherman said. After he finishes his jail time, Hulings will serve four years of probation.

Hulings pleaded no contest to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was sentenced Monday.

The victim said she'd had sexual contact with Hulings multiple times for more than a year, beginning the week after her 16th birthday. The victim was not associated with Hulings' work with CPS. The State Journal generally does not identify victims of sexual assault.

Hulings was suspended from his job as a CPS investigator after charges were filed. As of July 11, he no longer was employed by the agency.

He initially was charged with seven counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
