USDA travels to Philippines and Thailand

The USDA Under Secretary for Trade says the Philippines and Thailand present similar opportunities for U.S. ag exports.

“Each country is seeing a pretty rapidly growing disposable income.  Their gross domestic product is rising in the six to nine percent category.”

From Bangkok Friday, Ted McKinney told reporters many large retailers market products under the flag of where they’re from and American brands are held to a higher standard.  “There’s an instant recognition of safety first, and instant recognition of quality, and in many cases the brand is well known.”

McKinney says American food holidays are also gaining more popularity aboard and traditional Thanksgiving items including cooked turkeys, stuffing and cranberries were being promoted.

He’s optimistic about increased opportunities for products like wheat, DDGs, pork, distilled beverages and more.

The Philippines is the 10th largest overall market for ag exports and Thailand is the 13th largest.
