Thursday's basketball: Central Michigan beats CSU Bakersfield
Bimini, Bahamas — David DiLeo scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half, including two 3-pointers during Central Michigan’s decisive late run, and the Chippewas beat CSU Bakersfield 67-55 on Thursday night in the opening game of the Junkanoo Jam.
DiLeo hit four 3-pointers – all in the second half – and had nine rebounds. Shawn Roundtree led Central Michigan (3-0) with 16 points, Larry Austin added 14 with eight rebounds and four assists and Kevin McKay scored 13.
Bakersfield, which trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, took a 52-49 lead when Damiyne Durham hit a 3-pointer with 6:17 to play. DiLeo answered with a 3 about 30 seconds later and the Chippewas never again trailed. Rickey Holden made two free throws to make it 54-all with 3:16 remaining, but CMU outscored the Roadrunners 13-1 from there.
Durham led Bakersfield (1-2) with 16 points, including five 3s, and Greg Lee added 12 points and nine rebounds.
State women
Michigan 79, (at) Western Michigan 42: Naz Hillmon scored 20, Hallie Thome 14 and Kayla Robbins 13 for Michigan (2-0). Kamrin Reed scored 18 for Western (1-2).
Big Ten
Iowa 77, No. 13 Oregon 69: At New York, Jordan Bohannon scored 16 points to lead Iowa to an upset of Oregon in the second semifinal of the 2K Classic.
Luka Garza added 12, and Ryan Kriener finished with 11.
The Hawkeyes (3-0) will play UConn in the championship game tomorrow, while Oregon (2-1) will meet No. 15 Syracuse in the consolation game. Connecticut upset Syracuse, 83-76, in the first game.
Iowa led throughout. The Hawkeyes jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 2:36, and enjoyed a 39-28 advantage at halftime. The lead grew to 13, 52-39, on Kriener’s dunk with 12:19 left in the second half.
Oregon closed with seven, 76-69, in the final 23.6 seconds, but that was as close as the Ducks would come.
Ehab Amin led all players with 25 points. Bol Bol chipped in with 14, and Victor Bailey Jr. had 12.
No. 23 Purdue 92, Appalachian State 70: At Charleston, South Carolina, Carsen Edwards had 25 points, 17 in the first half, as Purdue powered past Appalachian State at the Charleston Classic.
The Boilermakers improved to 3-0. They will face the winner of the final opening-round game here, either Wichita State or Davidson, on Friday for a spot in the tournament finals.
Purdue took a 46-32 lead by halftime and gradually grew the lead to 26 down the stretch.
Ryan Cline added 21 points for Purdue. Edwards and Cline each hit four of their team’s 13 3-pointers.
Justin Forrest had 14 points to lead Appalachian State (1-2).
Ohio State 69, (at) Creighton 60: C.J. Jackson’s 3-pointer gave Ohio State its final lead with 2 minutes left, and the Buckeyes held on after squandering a double-digit halftime lead. Keyshawn Woods scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the first half as the Buckeyes (3-0) got out to a 37-25 halftime lead, but Creighton (2-1) stormed back to take a four-point lead before fading and losing for the first time in 25 home nonconference games since December 2015.
(At) DePaul 72, Penn State 70, OT: Max Strus had 21 points, Devin Gage added a career-high 14 points and DePaul bounced back after struggling down the stretch in regulation. Jaylen Butz had a career-high 15 rebounds as DePaul won in the Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup. The Blue Demons are 3-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Lamar Stevens had 25 points and Myles Dread added 19 for Penn State, which dropped to 2-1.
