Southwest Florida golf column: Azinger, Annika highlight Immokalee Charity Classic Pro-Am

Steve Thompson, Patrick Trittler, Paul Belfore and David Gordley, with golf pros Paul Azinger and Kristy McPherson, won the Immokalee Foundation Charity Classic Pro-Am on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018 at Bay Colony Golf Club.

Paul Azinger made the most of his first appearance in the Immokalee Foundation Charity Classic Pro-Am at Bay Colony Golf Club on Monday. He was part of the winning team.

Azinger, making the transition to replace Johnny Miller as the lead golf analyst for NBC Sports, and LPGA pro Kristy McPherson teamed with amateurs Steve Thompson, Patrick Trittler, Paul Belfore and David Gordley for the win.

"The more I read and understand what the Immokalee Foundation is all about, the more I want to kind of get behind it," Azinger said. "I've always been motivated to help young people."

LPGA Tour legend Annika Sorenstam played once again as well, and was joined by LPGA Tour player Mo Martin of Naples.

"It's a wonderful cause to give back to the community and to children who might not be as fortunate as we are," Sorenstam said.

Pros Richard Johnson and Michelle McGann and amateurs Janet Belle, Terrilynne Boling, Patti Krupp and Kathy Linsin won the women's division. Pros George McNeill of Fort Myers and Paige Mackenzie and amateurs Mike Stevens, Tom Elkin, Jack Krol, and B.J. Robison were the men's winners. Pros Alena Sharp and Dudley Hart of Naples and amateurs Peter and Kaye Negri and Donald and Peggy Redlinger won the mixed division. Kenneth Thomas had the closest-to-the-pin.

"The Immokalee event is always great," McNeill said. "It's incredible seeing the difference it makes to the local kids.  I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it."

Naples High graduate and LPGA Tour player Kris Tamulis wouldn't have missed it. And she did everything she could to make it after the tour's event in China wrapped up Saturday.   How much?

"I had a 5:30 wake-up call in China on Saturday for the final round," she said. "I left on my 15-hour flight back to the USA at 2 a.m. the same night.  I landed in Tampa Sunday afternoon, then unpacked, repacked and drove straight to Naples, having to stop halfway because I was struggling to keep my eyes open.

"I woke up Monday morning at 2 a.m. from jet lag.  If the event was not in my hometown to support such an amazing foundation that does so much for kids in our community, I wouldn’t have put my body through the extra effort.  But, as always,  I am so proud of Naples, and the people who donate so much of their time and money (in most cases) to this area of their second homes. It’s inspiring, and I wouldn’t skip it."

The combined amount raised at the Immokalee Foundation’s Charity Classic Celebration and Pro-Am was more than $2 million.

Tamulis, McNeill reflect on 2018: Looking at the numbers, and Naples High graduate Kris Tamulis, who plays out of Grey Oaks, and Fort Myers' George McNeill may not appear to have had successful 2018s.

Just to the contrary.

Even though Tamulis failed to finish in the top 72 to earn a spot in this week's CME Group Tour Championship, she sees the overall season as a positive. Last year, she was 118th on the money list, but this year she was 86th. She's 90th in the Race to the CME Globe, compared to 115th last year.

"After a horrible LPGA season in 2017, I had serious thoughts on whether 2018 might be my last year playing," Tamulis said. "People are constantly commenting on my age (37) and when I’ll retire to have kids.  I committed this season to sorting out my ball-striking problems that plagued my year and trying to take more weeks off.  The result was a season I am very proud of.  I finished T4 in my second start.  I made a lot of cuts, oftentimes going the wrong direction on the leaderboard on the weekend, but I really felt good about how I was hitting it, and I enjoyed my weeks on the road.

"I definitely struggled with my putting at the end of the summer and that hurt my earnings, but I’ve worked hard with my putting coach, John Graham, in the weeks leading into my last event of the year in China and had another great week in difficult conditions finishing T22 after about a month off."

All of this has Tamulis looking forward to 2019, and finding that personal and professional balance.

"I’m slowly learning I play my best refreshed instead of months on the road playing seven to nine weeks in a row," she said. "At this point in my career, and life, I find myself incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to do whatever I want.  I don’t desire to be the best golfer in the world.  I desire to be the best balanced version of myself enjoying each opportunity that comes, and dabbling at being a housewife in my off weeks.  Going into my 15th year on the LPGA, I couldn’t be happier."

McNeill, 43, on the other hand, also is trying to put everything back together after dealing with some back issues in recent years. He's learned how to manage himself and his practice, and is striving to get those to lead to success when he's out on the tour. His best finish was a tie for 13th at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship back in March. He missed the cut in his only event so far in the 2018-19 wraparound season, at the Sanderson Farms Championship last month.

"The season was OK," McNeill said. "I played 11 events and had a couple decent finishes.  I have lots of room for improvement but I need to take the time to work on it, which I just haven’t to this point.  I’ll get back on track soon and see if I can give it another try to be full exempt again.

"My back is OK. I don't practice or play near as much, so it feels decent most of the time. I still go to the gym and therapy all the time so that helps."

Aubudon completes renovation: Audubon Country Club recently completed the renovation of its 18-hole Joe Lee-designed golf course under direction of golf course architect J. Drew Rogers and golf course superintendent Kenyon Kyle.

During a six-month closure, Glase Golf Construction completely rebuilt and recontoured all 18 greens with Tifeagle Bermudagrass and installed new greens irrigation surrounds.  Other improvements include an enlarged and enhanced short-game practice area, a new brick paver golf cart staging area, and additional native landscaping, elevating the beauty of the natural surroundings.

The green renovation project was a culmination of improvements to the golf course completed over the past three years during which time fairways and tees underwent a grass conversion from 419 Bermudagrass to Celebration Bermudagrass in two phases in 2015 and 2016.

"Our members have found the new greens to be challenging and more fun to play,” said Rick Bintzler, Green Committee Chair at Audubon Country Club. “This was a well-planned, phase renovation that demonstrates the Club's commitment to continuously improve our facilities."
