Roadblocks to overcome for U.S. pork into Mexico

A protein analyst with RaboBank is anxious for trade between the U.S. and Mexico to get back to normal.

Christine McCracken says she hopes the new NAFTA agreement gets ratified by Congress early in 2019.

“And we’re actually still facing the steel and aluminum tariffs, so until those are lifted they won’t lift the 20 percent tariff on pork exports.”

Mexico is the largest volume market and second-largest value market for U.S. pork exports.

“Without those tariffs being lifted, we’re still going to lose a big part of the value of that carcass.  So we’ve got to get (those tariffs) lifted for sure.”

Brownfield spoke to McCracken at last week’s NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
