This U.S. Mint numismatic sales report covers the week ending November 4, 2018. The Mint’s best-selling product this week was the 2018 U.S. Mint Proof Set (18RG), which sold 7,925 units. In second place was the 2018 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set (18RH), which sold 3,909 units. The third best-selling item this week was the 2018 American Silver Eagle one-ounce Proof coin (18EM), with 2,281 sold. It’s followed by the 2018 U.S. Mint Uncirculated Coin Set (18RJ), with 2,234 individual units sold; and the 2018 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set (18RC), with 1,909 sold.
This week saw a downward adjustment of -11 for the 2017 Native American $1 Coin Rolls, Bags and Boxes (17NE), -10 for the 2017 2017 Uncirculated Coin Set (17RJ), -5 for the 2018 American Palladium Eagle one-ounce Proof coin (18EK), and -3 for the 2017 Ozark National Scenic Riverways Uncirculated five-ounce silver coin (17AL).
There will be two new items released this week: The 2018 Block Island National Wildlife Refuge Rolls and Bags and the 2018 Block Island National Wildlife Refuge Uncirculated five-ounce silver coin (18AN). Additionally, a limited number of World War I silver dollar and medal sets are available for purchase.
The following are the U.S. Mint’s cumulative sales figures for the reporting period ending Sunday, November 4. “LKS” indicates that the number given is the last known sales figure for a sold-out item. Mintage and product limits are indicated, where applicable; if a coin is in stock but is nearing sold-out status, a link to the Mint’s product page is provided. Items in italics either are scheduled for release or have been released too recently to appear on the report; items in bold are appearing on the report for the first time.

I think it is clear that there is more money in collecting labels than in collecting coins.
I never would have imagined there would be trolley labels, autograph labels, First Day labels… it is literally the combination of coins and baseball cards. I don’t like it at all. I will never put any real money into that game. (65 vs. 66 vs. 66+ CAC).
MarkInFlorida says
The breast cancer unc 50¢ sold less than 2% of the authorized mintage. Someone isn’t doing their job. Hope they didn’t mint them all.
Jeffrey R says
@MarkInFlorida
I don’t know why they just don’t drop the Kennedy half and issue into circulation the commemorative for that year. It would make collecting more interesting to the general public.
Caliskier says
@ Jeffrey, not a bad idea per say, however since the Kennedy Half has not been issued for circulation since 2001, that is highly unlikely. People won’t carry change at all right now, so who wants a heavy Keenedy half or other(commemorative) floating around in their purses or pockets???
Caliskier says
Basically, CC’s have kept an entire generation from seeing, handling or caring about change or what their change even looks like!
How could anyone possibly be texting, looking at what the design is on the $.25 or $.50 they received in thier change, while getting that first sip of your fresh Starbucks, while profiling the person sitting in the corner minding their own business???

CAg, someone is stuck with it now!! Wow, labels deluxe it seems & a “+” = $$$$$$$$$ IMHO the latest generation of PCGS coins is overgraded in general & seems to have alot of cleaned coins not hitting body bags or authentic holders, early 19th cet. & even later obviously cleaned stuff is now slabbed by PCGS w/o comment- many times it seems. Re-slab $$ makes it too attractive for some, or I can just try real hard & put a sharp + on mu new stuff…

Cag says: “UNBELIEVABLE HOW LONG THE MINT IS GOING TO KEEP THE 2016s…”
What part to you is the unbelievable part?
Mine is how many coins were struck/over struck(not the error), way over the demand, that the Mint has basically been IMO having to continue selling, in order to minimize the number they have to melt/destroy? Someone’s estimations were way off for 2016 &2017 and they’re still sitting on too many AGE’s!
If the 2018 1/2 oz PF AGE, goes back on sale immediately after Dec 31st, that would tell me they pulled this issue to try and sell as many 2016’s /2017’s before they are forced to take the hit and melt down there remaining inventory(2016).
If that happens, stick a fork in my purchases, excluding finishing off the ATB 5oz series! For me that would just be the last straw of many, regarding Mint sales practice, tactics, customer service, shipping issues, quality control, gimmicks, premiums, etc, etc…..
cagcrisp says
@Caliskier says, “CAG, says: “UNBELIEVABLE HOW LONG THE MINT IS GOING TO KEEP THE 2016s…”
What part to you is the unbelievable part?”
What is Unbelievable is that the Mint has carried over excess inventory on a Lot of products in the past but they’ve never carried over American Gold Eagles this long before.
I treat Gold on a completely different level than clads and Silver.
I don’t care if they carry over Anything…as long as it’s Not Gold…
Caliskier says
Alright Cag, your numbers show the Mint sold a total of 23, 2017 PF 1/2 oz AGE’’ and 7, 2016 PF 1/2 oz AGE’s on the latest sales report. 30 total coins. Both issues are currently showing a minimum of 99 in stock on the Mints website. Heading towards the 12/21/31 end of sales for both the 2016 & 2017 AGE PF’sto me will prove interesting? Not to mention what the Mint does or doesn’t do with the 2018 PF AGE’s?
How many did they Mint and how long until those sell enough to warrant pulling the plug in 2019, 2020, etc???
Hmmm… somewhere I read something about mintages and aftermarket values……..ponder….? Haha(Cag)
John Q. Coinage says
Cag & Cali, the aftermarket for these proof coins is weak @ present, the biguns sold out 1z proofs @ $25 over spot, similar discounts for all others in caps only. Cag, th uSM may say that the 2o16 is actually a 2019 with an inverted 9 to sellinto 2o19……hmmmmm The # of collectors with the deaire & money to collect these AG Proofs is small……..I have some 1/2z but the last I got was when they cost about $435 before the AGrun up…..@ least they are “last chance”……..
Caliskier says
I would find it interesting to know how much of a loss exactly, per recycled/melted AGE productive mint takes? Melting/recycling//destroying both the medal, packaging, plus labor/overhead to produce???? Yes I’m aware they re-melt and make new blanks. That, however has cost involved beyond what cost was originally incurred.
Security for transportation to and from refinery, etc, the whole enchilada/kitten kaboodle!
Why, one may ask? The reason is, that if the cost of doing this is more than $50/product, they’d be better off coming up with a “VERYLAST CHANCE SALE” and offer old/out of date/expiring AGE products each year beginning Jan 1st and going either for 2 weeks or throughout the month, where they offer up remaining AGE stock, at 1 price tier lower(pricing grid) versus taking the hit and destroying vs selling! Then melt away and be done with the remains. Also perhaps that would help with minimizing losses and better handling the following years inventory and manufacturing?
As there isn’t much incentive for the Mint to over produce and would hopefully force them to better monitor mfg.,, forecasts, expectations, sales, etc???
Caliskier says
Right now, there really isn’t much in the way of OGP 2012, 2013, or 2018 PF 1/2 oz AGE’s to be found/bought? Most are slabbed and are going for roughly current($807.00) issue price for PF 69 and roughly, $100-$200 +, for PF70’s.
If the Mint has been listening and the 2018 AGE’s happen to be where they draw the line(mintages) and end of sales based on demand, IMO this would potentially help them get a better handle on REALLY how many AGE collectors are out there? The 2018 went on sale in March? So 10-12 months ago by years end. You’re not suddenly going to have a bunch of collectors come in and buy up inventory, so why would you mfg, that much inventory and be sitting on it, for years on end???
I know it’s a bummer, however it may be time for a real audit of how the US Mint does business? Times/technologhy have/has changed! Demand is down and it’s time for them to slim down? You just can’t make tons of inventory that you know, no one is going to buy, just to keep people employed and getting enough hours! I don’t want people to lose jobs, however this is a waste of time, money, resources, etc to be so far off in your sales forecasts that your products or overproduced product is celebrating its 3rd birthday by stamped date! (2016 AGE product) I realize no body has ever accused the Government of being, fiscally responsible, however just because each year, you end up with a surplus to turn over to the US Treasury, doesn’t mean there can’t additional cost savings to be had by running a tighter ship? Just saying……

@ 20th, due to cost shown, I’m going to assume we are still talking 2018 PF 1/2 oz AGE’s? If so you were quite lucky in your timing, as sales shows zero to as many as 8 sold over the past 3 sales reports.
They’ve been listed as “Currently Unavailable” for close to 3 weeks or more based on a post by Cag? Perhaps 4 + weeks? I was really stoked when I located mine by calling the Denver Mint gift shop at the end of October.

@ caliskier
I think you were the one who mentioned the “Last Chance”…that got me REMEMBERING what happened when they announced “Last Chance” and some items disappeared that weren’t on the list. I made a lot of profit from the 87 REVERSE proof I sold, had a message from the bank showing my payment went through(credit card paid off), so I went looking on the US Mint site on a Sunday(Nov 4th). I sat there for around 3 minutes debating if I should buy them(one for each niece). I thought…what the heck, I made $3,800 on the REVERSE proof sets, hit the add to cart 🙂
We’ll see what happens. Both have a VERY small white speck on the obverse that I hope I can blow off before I submit them…should go PR70 if removed…coins look great!

Seems, at least for now the Mint magic number on these is roughly, 17,650-17,700 & done if not sooner.
Although a few others in the series have similar mintages, the 2017 George Rogers Clark Silver 5-oz. Unc. Coin is an exception, selling out at 14,731.

I really like the 5 oz P ATB’s. One main reason is I don’t need magnification to see details and enjoy the artwork! I love the great outdoors and I find this series, very appealing!
IMO, they could re-release the ATB series in a PF finish and do quite well on a sell through with a set mintage of 7500-10,000 max mintage of each issue? Perhaps a mintage of 12,500-15,000, if ithe premium to spot price, could be lowered, that would help sell through and perceived value and an extension of the Olive Branch towards us collectors, whom seemingly nit-pick(yes, I’m one of em’) the US Mint and it’s business practices.

“When Defensive stocks ( or risk off trades) Don’t work, you know you’re up Against it…”
Its like everything has become first spouse gold coins, really no love in market for much of anything right now. Market down for weeks, metals down. as the saying goes Cash (on the non collectible type) is King.

@ips_stuff,
On July 1st, 2016:
Gold = $1340.00
Silver = $19.75
10 year = 1.3759 % ALL TIME RECORD LOW
30 year = 2.1532 % Close to Record Low
NOW….You can get a 3 month Treasury Bill that pays 2.376%
…AND…Jeffery Gundlach says the 10 year could hit 6% in 3 years…
IF that happens… You can Kiss Precious Metals and Stocks GoodBye…
…AND…Indeed Cash will be King…

% rates had to go up, the ? is IF they do IF there is inflation despite Cags thought do the PMs have an upside? Clearly, the collector market is weak…….PMs are stagnant….stocks, wh oknows ROKU has made me some $ of late, I /we should have gone short on GE @ $14……..the PMs are no longer sexy to the marketplace & as far as those under 30 or maybe 40 they have very little % in PM, I have a nephew who I oltd about the Pd proof, he did nto buy but was impressed with the gain, said let him know the next one…yeah right CAG! I said you did not play with the last one..he prefers digital money! Etherium despite getting a real whacking on it of late……
