Crops have a hankering for sulfur

An agronomist says crops need sulfur like farmers want $5-dollar corn.

Ross Bender is with The Mosaic Company.

“The plants need it pretty significantly.  It’s compounded by the fact that now with higher yields (there’s) greater nutrient removal, and plants have physiologically changed.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the NAFB Convention in Kansas City, he says after N, P and K, sulfur is the fourth-most abundant nutrient in the plant.

“Not only do they need more nutrients to account for the removal, they need (the nutrients) available for longer.  So anything growers can do to keep that sulfur available for longer will help them.”

Bender encourages growers to think about using sulfur even on crops they haven’t used sulfur on in the past, like soybeans.
