China trade war alters flow of U.S. feed grains

The president of the National Grain and Feed Association says the trade war with China has dramatically altered the flow of ag products.

Speaking to Brownfield at the 2018 NAFB Convention in Kansas City, Randy Gordon says soybeans have been impacted the most.

“We’ve exported quite a few soybeans to Argentina given their drought.  There are a lot more soybeans going into Europe now.  And I know the soy industry is working hard to increase alternative markets.”

Long-term, Gordon is hopeful the U.S. can come to an agreement with China.

“That’s a preferred market.  There is some need to diversify our sales to different markets around the world, but we’re seeing the impact of the loss of the Chinese market on basis levels in the Northern Plains in particular (because of) lost volume going to the Pacific Northwest.”

He says soybeans are still finding a home, but it’s at a lower value because of China.
