Chimney fire contained on Friday at Re-Store Shop

No flames could be seen as the fire was contained within the chimney, however smoke was seen pouring out the chimney stack.

Ruidoso firefighters exit the Re-Store shop at 2200 Sudderth Drive after a chimney fire had been extinguished around 11:00 a.m.

A small chimney fire broke out at the Re-Store shop, 2200 Sudderth Drive, at the corner of Country Club and Sudderth drives around 11 a.m. Friday.

Ruidoso fire and police departments along with EMS personnel responded to the fire.

The Ruidoso Fire Department was called on scene to 2200 Sudderth Drive after a 911 call had been made reporting a fire in a chimney inside the store.

"The fire was contained in the chimney and was put out just minutes after the fire department arrived on scene," Ruidoso Public Information Officer Kerry Gladden said.

Smoke can be seen pouring out of the chimney stack at the Re-Store shop, 2200 Sudderth Drive, as a fire broke out in the chimney around 11 a.m.

No flames could be seen as the fire was contained within the chimney, however smoke was seen pouring out the chimney stack. The Ruidoso Fire Department made certain the fire had not spread beyond the chimney and carefully checked the store's roof for any signs of the fire having spread.

With temperatures dropping into the mid 30s, it is that time of the year again when people seek warmth from fire places and pot-belly stoves.

This incident is just a small reminder why it is important to maintain fireplaces and chimneys. Pine needles, leaves, animal's nest, and other debris accumulate over the summer months making it a fire hazard. Making certain that chimneys are clear of obstructions within the chimney can prevent unintentional fires from occurring in a chimney.

Emergency crews were still on scene at 12:30 p.m. Friday. There were no injuries reported and the fire is contained.
