CHAMBERSBURG - A Chambersburg man was arrested last month after he allegedly choked and beat a woman during an argument and threatened to kill her.

Chad Ryan Martin, 38, is charged with one count felony aggravated assault, one count felony strangulation and one count misdemeanor simple assault, and is cited with harassment, according to court records. He was taken into custody on Oct. 29, and was released on $75,000 bail the same day.

State police were dispatched that day to a home on Anthony Highway to check on the welfare of a woman whose daughter had contacted authorities. According to the report, the daughter said her boyfriend received a message from her mother around midnight which stated she was being beaten by a man.

The trooper knocked on the back patio door of the home, but got no answer. Another officer also knocked on a window. A few minutes later a man inside asked who was there. Despite identifying themselves as part of state police, the man did not answer the door, court documents show.

After about 20 minutes of troopers asking the man to answer, the woman they were looking for came out and let them inside the home. The man, identified as Martin, then spoke with authorities and told them he and the woman had argued in the driveway, but nothing physical happened.

The woman confirmed this, police said, but she also said it began when Martin pulled her out of her car by her hair after she got home from the store and threw her to the ground. He then got on top of her and struck the back of her head off the pavement several times and choked her by putting his arm on her throat, causing her to black out, court documents show. The woman said that after she woke up, Martin threatened to kill her next time.

The argument had continued for the next two hours inside the house. According to documents, Martin threw the woman to the ground, kicked her several times in the ribs and stomach and, once again, threatened multiple times to kill her.

Police said the woman was taken to Chambersburg Hospital for bruises on her rib cage and swelling on top of her head, as well as a possible concussion.

A preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Nov. 6, was continued to Dec. 11.

A Waynesboro man is also accused of choking a woman.

A Waynesboro police officer was called to an apartment on North Franklin Street after receiving a call from a woman wanting authorities to check on her daughter.

Once police arrived, the daughter told authorities their services were not required, but she was trying to hide her face and would not allow the officer inside. Police said she eventually told them a man, identified as Baugher, slapped her and made her lip bleed during an argument, because he thought she was cheating on him. The woman also said he choked her before slapping her, documents show, and mentioned Baugher had done something like this before.

Baugher was arraigned and released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 27.
