Comments for The Way Forward Jason,
I told you up front that I was not going to let you cut and paste. You remember me telling you this, right? You are arguing for a literal interpretation of the Bible, not the Greek/Hebrew Bible because you can’t read Greek/Hebrew. So, what you are arguing for is a literal interpretation of an English translation of the Greek/Hebrew texts. So,I am asking you to interpret the verses I have given you using only your inspired, inerrant English translation. (which I assume is the KJV, the only Bible used at the college you attended) Since the same word, day, is used in the creation story and the command/punishment given to Adam, what justification is there, from the English text of the Bible, for day meaning one thing in the creation story and another thing in the command/punishment given to Adam?
You see, I totally agree that the word day can mean different things in the Bible. But, when you insist that the creation story is 6 literal 24 hour days, you then must use that same interpretive rule throughout the Bible. If you object, then you must be able to show from the Bible why day should be interpreted one way in the creation story and another way in the command/punishment given to Adam. And why you are at it, explain Genesis 2:2, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” What in the English text suggests that God rested for any longer than a 24 hour day?
Literalism is a bitch, Jason because it forces you to believe things that no rational person believes and it makes the Bible say things its authors never intended it to say. I get it, you think the Bible, in all its forms, is the inspired, inerrant words of God. This is a faith claim that you are making, for which you have no evidence outside of the fact that the the Bible says it is inerrant, inspired. For those of us who who reject your belief system, we look at the Bible just like we would any other literary work. This is the only grounds for you and I or you and anyone else to have a meaningful discussion. My goal here is to disabuse you of your extreme, anti-intellectual literalism. I doubt that I will succeed.
