Fear based conversions when a person is close to death probably is most effective with people who have had earlier exposure to religion. Another factor is that there are a lot of people ready to be caring and nice, if and only if you come back into the fold. My friend had a good friend who left Mormonism behind only to come back to it when he was dying of AIDS. His family was willing to welcome him back with open arms and care for him if he told them what they wanted to hear. He didn’t have many good options left.

Christopher Hitchens commented on deathbed conversions. He made a point to state that if anyone claims that he had made such admissions it would be because he was no longer in his right mind. He also pointed out that some rumored deathbed conversions, for example Darwin’s, are also a tale told by those who lived to tell it. ie, the Christian relatives. Ann Romney baptized her atheist father after he died.

I was in the movie theater the other day and saw a poster for the upcoming movie “Heaven is Real” based on the book. It’s a real movie by Sony Pictures with real actors like Greg Kinear.
