Comments for The Way Forward He seems to forget the emails he sent me on Facebook
Ben:Bruce, I read you most recent post. No need to attack me. Certainly my comments to you was not a personal attack. I’m sorry you took it that way. I will plan to post a response a bit later. I would appreciate it if you removed my photo from you post. Whatever you write is certainly your prerogative.
All of this made me think. I have a blog and I’d like to issue you a cordial challenge. Would you be willing to answer five questions of my choosing regarding your choice to be an atheist? I will post your answers on my blog. In turn, I will answer five questions from you on how we view atheists or whatever you would like. All I ask is that you tell me the direction of your questions before I agree. You are welcome to post my answers.
I’m hoping this can become a bit more civilized. I think debate is good and fine as long as it is profitable.
What do you say??
Bruce: You mistake directness for attack, a common problem Christians have. My adjectives accurately described my opinion of your interaction with me. (and certainly influenced by all your brethren who have come before you)
Ben: And your answer to my question?? By the way, I’m no where near the guys associated with the school you went to. I have no use for them. Do t assume you’re talking to one of them.
Bruce: about the photograph. Did you not mention that my post was public, so I needed to get used to people commenting who disagreed with me? Isn’t your photo public too? Do you have a different photo you would rather me use? I will gladly remove it if you insist but you may not like the photo I put in its place.
I would be glad to answer any questions for you, publicly or privately.
You mention civility. Let me be clear. I don’t think most Fundamentalists have a clue as to how they come off to others. When you respond like you did to a person you don’t know, based on reading 1,000 words, it hurts your cause. For those of us who were once Fundamentalists, it is a reminder of the smug arrogance we came to hate. Suggesting I was intellectually dishonest, or any of the other assertions you made, revealed that you do not make careful, reasoned judgments. (at least in my case)
Perhaps, I shouldn’t have called you a prick, Would dick have been better? And I am being funny.
Look we are not going to be friends or break bread together, but if you have questions that you would like me to publicly answer, I would be glad to do so. I will answer them and you can do with them what you will.
Let me know about the questions and the picture.
Ben: Ok. I don’t really care. Just didn’t think the photo was totally necessary. Such an innocent face certainly can’t lie!
I will message you over some questions. Feel free to answer them here or in a separate WORD doc and attach it.
I do think you need to use a different word for me than fundamentalist. That word has lost it’s significance and has been replaced with a religion of total legalism. That’s not me. I like Calvinist. Feel free to go with that! And that should be the first clue that I’m not in the inner circle of the so-called fundamentalists.
I will answer the remainder in my response which I hope you will post once it arrives.
Bruce: Now there is something we can agree upon. I was a Calvinist too and I know this estranged me from my fellow IFB pastors. Here is a post on why I use the word fundamentalist to describe all Evangelicals http://brucegerencser.net/2014/01/are-evangelicals-fundamentalists/
You can send your questions to my email address, XXXX@gmail.com I look forward to answering them. And I will gladly post your response.
Ben: Thanks!
When he came to this blog and left a huge pile of Jesus shit on my doorstep I withdrew my agreement to answer his questions. As the old gambler said, you got to know when to hold them and know when to fold them
