Comments for The Way Forward Belief through fear is basically Pascal’s Wager. The problem is if you decide it is safer to believe than not to believe, you still have to choose what religion and what subset of that religion is the correct one to save you. Unsurprisingly, most people will choose the dominant religion in their culture or the one they were most exposed to.
If only belief cleared up all those fears, it would at least be a selling point. I remember lots of fears as a Christian teen. Coming home to empty house when I expected to find family present immediately had me thinking I had missed the rapture. I worried about which sins exactly were the unforgivable ones (different people had different ideas) and if I could have committed any of them. Then getting exposed to Calvinism in college introduced the fear that, if that doctrine was correct, maybe I could have prayed the sinner’s prayer (multiple times – more fear) and still not have been elected.
