I know you addressed this to Bruce, but I have to observe that you are using ‘faith’ in a way that is bending the meaning quite a lot. When I was a Christian I said those words as well, that an ‘Atheist has faith’, but I was wrong. Faith is a religious term that means you believe something with limited (and sometimes no) evidence. If you could prove it- if you had the evidence- it would be science, not faith. As someone who no longer believes (after having been a sincere believer most of my adult life), I like having more reason and evidence in my life. It actually makes me a lot happier.

Peter Boghossian has an illustration about faith that resonates with me. He says that making a ‘truth claim’ based on faith is not something we accept in our daily lives. The example: If we have a door in our house we want to replace, we don’t use faith to determine it’s dimensions. We don’t pray and ask for revelation. Instead we go and measure it. We use reason in our daily life. But for many reasons we throw out that rationality when it comes to the larger matters, or where we may have gaps in our knowledge.

Do we know how the universe began? No, and I’m comfortable with that as long as we humans don’t stop looking for the answer. Simply saying ‘God did it’ is not really good enough for me. It’s a dead-end to thought and improving our understanding of the wonderful universe we get to experience for a few short moments.
