Comments for The Way Forward My atheism has nothing to do with how the universe came into existence. This question does not interest me in the least. Instead, the universe that now is, is best explained through evolution, geology, astronomy, cosmology, etc. Neither science or Christianity has evidence of first cause. Christians quote Bible verses, scientists say, we don’t know but we continue to investigate. The latter is more intellectually satisfying for me.
Atheism is the default belief of all humans. From a sociological, historical, and psychological perspective, we know that particular religious beliefs are taught rather than being inherent. Most people embrace the religion of their culture and family. This is easily proved by looking at a map of religion dispersal. My becoming an atheist is the result of me intellectually rejecting the religious indoctrination of my past. (Raised in a Christian home, attended Christian churches, attended a Christian college)
I don’t ask proof from Christians unless they come to this site and attempt to make faith statements they think are facts. (i.e. The Bible is inerrant, Jesus was born of a virgin, Jesus resurrected from the dead, Jesus walked on water and through walls…all things that the overwhelming evidence says are untrue)
Unlike the fundamentalist Christian, who is certain they are right, I know that I can be wrong. That said, based on the available evidence and the fact I do not have have the requisite faith necessary to believe, I do not think the claims Christians make for God,Jesus or the Bible are true. The same could be said for Christian beliefs about human nature, sin, and a host of other things. Based on my exhaustive and extensive investigation of Christian belief, I am confident that I have come to the right conclusions. Perhaps another god of some sort might appear and make itself known to me, but, for now, I have concluded that all the gods people worship are the creation of humans. Since I believe this to be true, I no more fear or worry about the Christian God than I do Santa Claus. Both are mythical beings that hold no power over me.
