Wisconsin farmers making harvest progress despite wetness

USDA reporters say combines were rolling all over Wisconsin last week as farmers took advantage of a break from the rain.  Rain returned to some areas for the weekend, but good progress was made.

Corn for grain harvest is 46% complete with an average moisture content of 20%.  The soybean harvest is 61% finished.  Potatoes are now 97% complete after a slow and chilly start to the harvest.

USDA reporters say several combines got stuck in the mud, and farmers in Rock County are waiting for the water table to go down so they can get into fields.  Producers in places like Kewaunee County reported some rutting in low-lying fields, and that machines with tracks performed very well.

Some manure application, fall tillage, cover crop planting, and winter wheat planting is getting done, but most farmers are getting this done later than normal.
