McKinney: Chinese ‘know exactly what we need’

USDA undersecretary Ted McKinney speaks with reporters in Des Moines. He was joined by Iowa ag secretary Mike Naig.

USDA undersecretary for trade and foreign affairs Ted McKinney says a quick resolution to the trade war with China is not likely.

“Here’s how I answer that question. It won’t be days and it won’t be weeks. I hope it’s not years,” McKinney says.

The core issues remain the same, he says.

“We’re waiting on China to tell us that they’re going to quit stealing our stuff—not just in ag, but across all sectors—and that they’re going to quit forcing companies into technology transfer.”

McKinney says the U.S. had made those demands very clear.

“The Chinese, I think, are trying to telegraph that they’re not sure what we want. No, no, no, no—no. They know exactly what we need. They’re just not ready to say it yet.”

McKinney made those comments Thursday during an impromptu news conference in Des Moines.

Brownfield’s Tom Steever contributed to this story.
