A man shot by Milwaukee police this month has died, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office reported Friday.

Milwaukee police shot an armed suspect Oct. 10 on the northwest side.

The man, identified by police Friday as Alonzo L. Smith, died Wednesday, according to the office.

A Police Department news release did not provide Smith's age or city of residence, but at the time of the shooting Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said he was 31.

Smith was shot shortly before 6 a.m. Oct. 10 outside an apartment building near North 101st Street and West Mill Road, where officers responded after a report of shots fired.

As officers approached, witnesses told them that shots were being fired at the apartment building, Morales said at the time.

According to Morales, the officers confronted Smith, who Morales said was armed with at least one firearm and standing in the building's parking lot.

Smith ignored officers' commands to drop the gun before he was shot by the officers, who believed they were being shot at, Morales said.

Smith was taken to a hospital, where he remained until he died.

Morales said police body camera video of the incident would be released but did not say when.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by Wauwatosa police.
