Scope of African Swine Fever outbreak in China multiplying

The director of the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) says the scope of the African Swine Fever outbreak in China is multiplying.

Dr. Paul Sundberg tells Brownfield from the beginning of the outbreak in August through September, the average herd size that has been reported is 320 pigs.

“In October, the average herd size of outbreaks jumped to 3,000.”

He says the most recent outbreak of 20,000 pigs on October 14th does skew the numbers.

“But if you take that out, October still has an average herd size outbreak of 1,700.”

Sundberg says the trend illustrates issues China is having with biosecurity and he believes the Chinese will continue to struggle controlling African Swine Fever.

Sources in China tell Sundberg government officials are focusing on the movement of people and pigs, as well as the feeding of food scraps to pigs.
