MSU heads global legume research

Michigan State University has been awarded 13.6 million dollars to lead global legume research.

Lab director Barry Pittendrigh tells Brownfield the Feed the Future Legume Systems Research Innovation Lab will build off of Michigan’s longstanding dry bean research.

He says the lab will be focused on work in West Africa and parts of Central America but will be applicable across the U.S.  “Two major crops that we will be focused on will be beans, common beans, and also cow pea or what’s known as black-eyed pea.”

He says the lab’s goal is to increase bean production and consumption in areas where malnutrition is very high and research other legumes that would work in the developing world.
