All the Brewers mania, a rock 'n' roll French restaurant review and 'Making a Murderer' Season 2

Who we are. Where we go. What we need to know.

This is the original binge watching. Milwaukee's film festival begins again tomorrow at theaters across the city, screening more than 300 movies. We've already done some homework for you and sorted out 35 movies to check out at the festival

But there's more — I'm giving away pairs of tickets to the film festival! Click here, enter your email address and tell me how cute my dog is on a scale of 1 to 10 for a chance to win. Five winners, who will receive a pair of tickets, will be notified by email Thursday.

The big deals this week: An on-again, off-again production of "To Kill a Mockingbird," Chicago's Goddess and the Baker opening and all the Brewers mania.

Let's talk business

“You can write this down. There will be a major recession in the United States. I don’t know when, but there will be one,” the CEO of Northwestern Mutual said. It's inevitable. More economists are mentioning recessions in their extended forecasts. Here are five tips for coping with a rockier economy, including one for people paying student loans.

The idea is to spark success that will feed on itself at No Studios, a creative arts hub in the Pabst Brewery complex. Oscar-winning screenwriter and filmmaker John Ridley is behind No Studios, which opened last week. The 40,000 square-foot space is intended to bring together people who create art and entertainment. "Frankly, I'm only here because people gave me more than one opportunity …," Ridley said. "And I really do want to impart that to other people."

Ten Wisconsin hotels and resorts made a list of the best in the Midwest. The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee claimed the highest spot for a Wisconsin hotel. Two other Milwaukee spots — The Iron Horse Hotel and the Kimpton Journeyman — also made the list, ranked by readers of Conde Nast Traveler. Have you been to any of the 10 Wisconsin hotels and resorts recognized?

Boozin'

The Brewers are tied in the series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. More than a World Series appearance is on the line — Third Space Brewing is wagering beer. One of the brewery's co-founders challenged an L.A. brewery to a barrel-aged beer bet. If — when — the Brewers win, Hangar 24 will ship a case of Pugachev's Cobra Imperial Stout to Milwaukee. It's aged in bourbon barrels for eight months and has a 15% ABV.

One more, then we'll go. Milwaukee beer gardens are starting to close. The Landing at Hoyt Park and Whitnall Park Beer Garden both close Sunday for the season. Estabrook Beer Garden and South Shore Terrace will close Nov. 4. A few more have already closed.

By my count, there's only one craft brewery left for me to try in Milwaukee, D14 Brewery and Pub. The brewery is celebrating four years in Bay View Saturday with an anniversary party. D14 will release a Belgian style chocolate quadruple for the occasion. They're calling it "soft, boozy, creamy, and surprisingly drinkable for a 13% beer." The party starts at 7 p.m.

Don’t go hangry

Chicagoans go to Goddess and the Baker for the 'gram and stay for the breakfast sandwich. Now, we can too. Goddess and the Baker's first Wisconsin location opened Tuesday at The Corners of Brookfield. It is also looking to open a spot in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward.

"Fauntleroy clearly is not a French restaurant that stands on pretense and formality, although the food is ambitious and well-made," our dining critic wrote this week in her review of the Third Ward restaurant. She called the duck a l'orange for two the rock star of the menu. Her review overall: * * * ½  (very good to extraordinary).

Here are the talkers

"Making a Murderer" completely sucked me in when it first debuted. I was on break during graduate school and completely ready to binge watch the true crime series. The filmmakers are coming out with Season 2. We'll see if I'll dedicate myself to hours on the couch. One of the Journal Sentinel reporters, who was featured in the first season, revisited what happened in the initial episodes.

Shorewood high school students were going to put on a production of "To Kill a Mockingbird." Then they weren't. Then they were. And now they're not again? The back and forth started when a group of students asked that the production refrain from using the N-word. We'll get more information about the latest decision this afternoon. Here's what's been said so far about the on-again on the production.

Brewers mania continues. The team won 12 in a row, which apparently means free burgers. All George Webbs in Wisconsin are giving out free burgers Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. If you can't make it then, the restaurant will give you a voucher for a free burger now. It's only the second time the chain has had to pay out on the deal. The last time was in 1987. While you're eating that free burger, listen to these songs about our hometown team
