Get up close during bird walk at Lake St. Clair Metropark

Harrison Township — Get up close with unique birds in a nature walk at Lake St. Clair Metropark in October.

Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township will host the walk on Oct. 26 along it's nature trail, looking for migratory birds. There's also a chance to see birds at the park's migration bird banding station. 

Walkers will convene at 9 a.m. at the Nature Center before hiking to the banding station for a demonstration led by Allen Chartier. Bird banding is one of the oldest and most important techniques used for studying and identifying individual birds, according to the Smithsonian's National Zoo. 

The Metropark's East District interpretive supervisor, Julie Champion, will discuss the history, ecology and management of the Metropark while on the bird walk; other experts will be available for questions. 

The event is free but registration is required. Register for the bird walk and banding demonstration on eventbrite or on the Michigan DNR website.
