Sioux City pork plant begins second shift

The Seaboard Triumph Foods pork processing plant in Sioux City, Iowa has started a second production shift.

“We’ve been staffing a second shift though the summer, just getting folks on board and trained,” says the plant’s chief operating officer Mark Porter, “Just here in the last week or so, we’ve begun testing our ability to harvest hogs on second shift and we successfully harvested over 11,000 yesterday—the first time the plant’s hit that milestone.”

Porter says the first shift is currently processing 10-thousand hogs per day. That number will double once the second shift is fully up and running. Porter says they plan to reach their processing goal of six million hogs annually by late 2019.

The plant currently has 1,800 employees. That number that will eventually reach 2,400, including management and management support.

George Bower, KICD, Spencer, Iowa contributed to this report.
