Marquette sophomore guard Greg Elliott will miss eight to 12 weeks after having surgery on his left thumb on Wednesday, the school announced.

Elliott suffered an injury during practice Oct. 5. He hurt the same thumb in MU's exhibition with Lindenwood last year but played the entire season in a small cast. Elliott had surgery on the thumb in the spring.

Elliott appeared in all 35 games as a freshman, averaging 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. The long-limbed Elliott also garnered praise from the coaching staff for his defensive abilities.

“We are disappointed for Greg, especially knowing how hard he worked in the off-season to prepare for his sophomore year,” MU coach Steve Wojciechowski said in a statement.  “We are confident he will apply his tremendous work ethic to his rehabilitation process and get back on the court soon.”

The Golden Eagles added graduate transfer Joseph Chartouny at guard to help bolster a backcourt that also returns junior Markus Howard. Junior Sacar Anim and sophomore Jamal Cain add depth on the wing and 6-foot-8 freshman Brendan Bailey has perimeter abilities.
